What are the best online English learning platforms?

The best online English language learning platforms in 2026 are British Council LearnEnglish and BBC Learning English for lessons and listening, Duolingo and Busuu for self-study, Coursera and EF English Live for structured courses, Preply and Cambly for tutors, and ELSA Speak and EngVarta for speaking practice. These fall into 5 types (learning websites, self-study apps, structured courses, tutor platforms and speaking-practice apps), so choose the type first by your goal, your level and how much you need to speak with a person.

Disclosure: EngVarta, one of the 10 platforms below, is our own product, so we have a clear interest in it. No platform paid to be included, and we take no affiliate or referral fees. Every entry, ours included, lists weaknesses.

How We Compared These Platforms

We started with 23 platforms and study tools: those named in Google’s top results, AI Overviews and ChatGPT answers to searches for online English learning platforms from India on 24 October 2026, plus popular study tools such as Grammarly, Quizlet and TED Talks. That day we checked each shortlisted platform’s official website, plus the Indian App Store listings of Duolingo, Busuu, Cambly and ELSA Speak. We bought no subscriptions.

Our 5 criteria: skills covered, CEFR level range, speaking time with a person, cost to start, and structure or certificates. Only 3 of the 10 (British Council, Busuu and EF English Live) published a CEFR level range for their courses on the pages we checked. We kept 2 platforms per type, leaving out italki and Alison, which overlap with Preply, Cambly and Coursera. Levels in brackets are the platform’s own CEFR range where published, otherwise our estimate (A1 = beginner, C2 = most advanced).

Which type of online English learning platform do you need?

Pick the type that matches your goal:

  • Speaking-practice apps: EngVarta for on-demand speaking practice with a certified English Expert, if you understand English but freeze when speaking; ELSA Speak for pronunciation and accent (AI).
  • Learning websites: British Council LearnEnglish for grammar and vocabulary by level, BBC Learning English for listening.
  • Self-study apps: Duolingo for beginners learning from their own language, Busuu for a levelled self-study course.
  • Structured courses: Coursera for university courses with certificates, EF English Live for teacher-led classes.
  • Tutor platforms: Preply for choosing your own tutor, Cambly for video conversation with native speakers.

1. EngVarta. Best for On-Demand Speaking Practice With a Certified English Expert (B1–B2)

EngVarta puts you on a live 1-on-1 audio call with a TESOL/ESL-certified English Expert. You choose a 15, 25 or 50-minute session and connect in minutes, with no scheduling. The Expert gives real-time corrections during the session and consolidated feedback towards the end, and each recording stays accessible for 30 days. By our own count, learners have completed 10 Lakh+ sessions since 2017.

Strengths: audio-only, so no camera; free vocabulary lessons, quizzes and rewards in the app and on YouTube; milestone certificates.

Weaknesses: live sessions are paid after the 100% refundable trial; live hours are 7 AM to midnight IST, not 24/7; sessions are audio-only, so it won’t suit you if you want video lessons.

Who should use EngVarta?

Learners who already understand English but hesitate or freeze when they speak. Budget: a ₹69, 100% refundable trial, then plans from ₹2,700 a month for 25 sessions; outside India, a $1 refundable trial, then plans from $45 a month for 25 sessions.

2. ELSA Speak. Best for Pronunciation and Accent (A2–B1)

ELSA Speak is an AI pronunciation coach. Its App Store listing describes 8,000+ lessons and real-time feedback on pronunciation and word stress.

Strengths: private drills at any hour; a choice of accents, including American, British and Australian.

Weaknesses: AI only, so there is no human listener; exam preparation and advanced features need Premium.

Who should use ELSA Speak?

Learners whose main problem is pronunciation, accent or word stress. Budget: free to start, with a 7-day trial of paid plans, then a Premium subscription. For more AI options, see our comparison of free AI English speaking practice apps.

3. British Council LearnEnglish. Best for Grammar and Vocabulary by Level (A1–C1)

LearnEnglish is the British Council’s free website of grammar, vocabulary and skills lessons sorted by CEFR level from A1 to C1, plus a free online level test. The paid English Online course adds live Zoom classes 24/7 (55-minute groups of up to 10 students, or 25-minute private classes) and AI-powered speaking practice.

Strengths: a trusted publisher; the paid course gives a certificate showing your CEFR level and study hours.

Weaknesses: the free site is self-study, with nobody listening to you speak; paid-course prices weren’t visible when we checked.

Who should use British Council LearnEnglish?

Self-learners who want reliable lessons now and live classes later. Budget: free lessons; the course is a monthly subscription.

4. BBC Learning English. Best for Listening to Everyday English (A2–B2)

BBC Learning English, which dates its English teaching back to 1943, sorts lessons into Easy, Medium and Hard across pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, work English and news. Four series, including 6 Minute English, get a new episode every week.

Strengths: podcasts, quizzes, downloads and a level test.

Weaknesses: input only, with no speaking feedback; levels are Easy to Hard, not CEFR.

Who should use BBC Learning English?

Intermediate learners who want daily listening and current vocabulary. Budget: no subscription or sign-in was needed for the lessons we checked.

5. Duolingo. Best for Beginners Learning From Their Own Language (A1–B1)

Duolingo teaches English through quick, game-like lessons. Its official course list on 24 October 2026 showed its English course taught from Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.

Strengths: you can start from your own language; a 14-day trial of the paid Super Duolingo tier.

Weaknesses: drills rather than real conversation, with no human listener; the free tier has ads.

Who should use Duolingo?

Absolute beginners who want a gentle start, especially from an Indian language. Budget: free core courses; Super Duolingo is priced in the app.

6. Busuu. Best for a Levelled Self-Study Course (A1–C1)

Busuu’s Complete English course runs from A1 to C1 with 655+ lessons, according to Busuu, which also cites 200+ hours of focused learning. Fluent speakers in its community give feedback on your spoken and written exercises. The free plan includes the complete course; Premium adds extras such as AI Conversations.

Strengths: a clear levelled path; feedback from real people; Busuu certificates, according to its App Store listing.

Weaknesses: feedback comes from community members, not teachers; no 1:1 teacher sessions, Busuu says; many features need Premium.

Who should use Busuu?

Beginner to advanced learners (A1–C1) who want a structured course with some human feedback. Budget: free plan; Premium is priced in the app. See also our English language learning apps list.

7. Coursera. Best for University Courses With Certificates (B1–C1)

Coursera hosts self-paced English courses from at least 5 universities, including the University of Pennsylvania, Georgia Tech, UC Irvine, the University of Washington and HKUST. Courses are free to start, and finishing one on the paid route earns a shareable Course Certificate.

Strengths: recognised university names; business English, writing and presentation topics.

Weaknesses: lectures and assignments, not conversation; the certificate is paid; courses are taught in English, which is hard for beginners.

Who should use Coursera?

Students and professionals at intermediate level or above who want a certificate for their CV. Budget: free to start; on 24 October 2026 Coursera Plus cost ₹2,099 a month or ₹13,999 a year.

8. EF English Live. Best for Teacher-Led Classes (A1–C2)

EF English Live works like a school: a course consultant sets your plan, and you mix private classes, small-group classes and self-study, with classes 24/7. Courses include General and Business English and TOEFL and TOEIC preparation, and EF says it has over 3,000 native and bilingual teachers.

Strengths: a full curriculum with live teachers; an exam and certificate after each level; money back after 12 weeks if you’re not satisfied and kept up weekly classes and self-study.

Weaknesses: prices are personalised, not published; the weekly commitment is heavy for casual learners.

Who should use EF English Live?

Learners who want a school-style course and can commit every week. Budget: a personalised quote. Compare formats in our guide to online English classes in India.

9. Preply. Best for Choosing Your Own Tutor (A1–C2)

Preply listed 46,737 English teachers on 24 October 2026, filterable by price, availability, accent and speciality. Lessons run on its own video classroom, Preply Space. You start with a 25- or 50-minute trial lesson, then a flexible plan you can pause or switch; if the first tutor isn’t a match, you can try 2 more for free.

Strengths: a very wide choice of tutors; a refund if you’re unhappy with your first lesson.

Weaknesses: quality and price vary by tutor; lessons are booked in advance.

Who should use Preply?

Learners who want one tutor for a specific goal, such as exam preparation, and are happy to schedule. Budget: set by your tutor; its price filter ran from ₹200 to ₹3,800+ per lesson.

10. Cambly. Best for Video Conversation With Native Speakers (B1–B2)

Cambly centres on conversation with native English speakers over video, for all levels, with tutors available 24/7, according to Cambly. Plans are Small Groups (a tutor and 1–2 students), Private+ (one-on-one lessons with recordings, transcripts and automated feedback) and Pro (structured lessons with Pro tutors).

Strengths: native-speaker conversation; you can build a team of tutors you like.

Weaknesses: prices are in US dollars; Small Groups are for adults 21+ only; the plans page doesn’t state lesson length.

Who should use Cambly?

Learners who want video conversation with native speakers and can pay in US dollars. Budget: on 24 October 2026 its site showed discounted plans from $17 a month (Small Groups) and $39 a month (Private+). For live options side by side, see EngVarta vs Cambly vs Preply vs italki.

Why isn’t your English improving with apps alone?

Usually because you take English in but rarely produce it. Websites, apps and courses build knowledge; speaking needs practice where you have to find words while a real person listens. AI can rehearse you; only a person can judge you. So add regular conversation with a person, using one of these apps for practising English speaking with real people.

A simple daily mix: one short lesson, 3 new words, then a conversation with a person that uses them. For a longer routine, see our 30-day and 90-day English fluency plan.

How do you choose the right online English learning platform?

The best platform to learn English online is the one whose type matches your goal: a learning website or self-study app for knowledge, a structured course for a plan and certificates, and a tutor platform or speaking-practice app for speaking. Many learners pair one platform to learn from with one to speak on. For speaking-focused picks, see the best English speaking apps in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. If websites like British Council LearnEnglish are free, why pay for an English learning platform?

Ans: You may not need to, if your goal is knowledge. LearnEnglish covers grammar, vocabulary and skills by level at no cost. What it doesn’t give you is a person who listens and corrects you as you speak. People mainly pay for that speaking time, a structured course or a certificate.

Q2. Is Duolingo enough to learn English on its own?

Ans: It is enough for a beginner’s start, but not for speaking fluently. Duolingo’s free, game-like lessons build vocabulary and basic grammar, and you can learn from Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and other Indian languages. Its lessons are drills with no human listener, so add a course or regular conversation with a person.

Q3. Is ELSA Speak free or paid?

Ans: Both. ELSA Speak is free to start, with a 7-day trial of its paid plans. On 24 October 2026 the Indian App Store listed a monthly plan at ₹499 and a 1-year ELSA Premium plan at ₹3,449. Premium is needed for features such as exam preparation.

Q4. Should I book a tutor or use an on-demand speaking practice app?

Ans: Choose a tutor platform if you want scheduled lessons planned around a specific goal, such as exam preparation; Preply lessons are booked in advance, and Cambly says its tutors are available 24/7. Choose an on-demand app for frequent, shorter practice without booking: ELSA Speak for AI pronunciation drills or EngVarta for a live English Expert. Many learners combine the two.

Q5. What do A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 mean in English?

Ans: They are the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from A1 (beginner) to C2 (most advanced). A levels describe basic users, B levels independent users and C levels proficient users. The British Council’s free online level test gives an approximate indication of yours.

Q6. What is the best website to learn English?

Ans: For self-study, British Council LearnEnglish is the most complete website we checked, with free grammar, vocabulary and skills lessons sorted from A1 to C1 and a free online level test. BBC Learning English is better for listening, with four series that add a new episode every week. Neither gives you a person to speak with, so pair one with a tutor or live practice.

Prices were checked on 24 October 2026 on each platform’s own website or, for ELSA Speak, its Indian App Store listing.
